Motivation, has your dipped already?
If it has, the good news is that’s normal.
Motivation always fades, that’s not a failure, it’s reality.
After 25 years of helping people, the ones who make progress aren’t the ones who the most ‘motivated’, they’re the ones with simple routines they can stick to, even on average days.
You’ve probably read or heard a phrase along the lines of:
‘motivation gets you started, but discipline keeps you going’?
This word is thrown around social media, often with very little thought or context.
The actual definition if motivation is simple:
‘the reason why somebody does something or behaves in a particular way’.
In essence, motivation is often at its highest when you set out to achieve a new goal.
Desire, emotions, & aspirations are all also high because everything is all new and exciting!
Motivation is often linked to our emotional state at the time, which is often why it can fly high when you are feeling inspired or sink low when things get too tough.
Our environment can also massively influence how motivated we feel at a given time, it’s easier to be motivated around motivated people, likewise it’s easier to be demotivated around demotivated people.
If you see someone else achieve their goals it can motivate you to do the same, If you see someone sacking if off it could detract you from your goals.
However, the fitness industry will often lead you to believe if you lack motivation it’s because ‘you don’t want it enough’.
I believe motivation cannot be force fed. True motivation is often a bi product.
Think about it: If I post a video of me training, telling you to be ‘motivated’, would that actually work?
If I post the exact same video, without ramming ‘motivation’ down your throat, would you be more ‘motivated’ by my actions, and perhaps feel like you could also take action?
It’s a fine line, sometimes the actions of others do nothing but remind you that haven’t done anything!
Discipline is the ability to consistently(key words) apply effort and maintain focus over time, regardless of wavering or changing emotional states or whatever environment you find yourself in.
Discipline helps you to keep moving forward, regardless of the ups and downs you may encounter along the way.
Your motivation and your discipline will waver through time, what counts is that you are true to yourself, you give what you can give, and you keep moving forward long term.
You don’t need hype.
You don’t need extremes.
You need something realistic that fits your life.
